An Introduction to Jarvis Christian College
Jarvis Christian College (JCC) " the college with the personal touch and where dreams come true" is a historically black institution that has been affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since inception in 1913. The college is located on Highway 80 in Hawkins, TX. The mission of the college is to prepare students intellectually, socially, and personally to function effectively in a global and intellectual setting.
An Introduction to the Major
Chemistry is a versatile field that finds applications in every sector of society, whether one is in business, education, research or service. Analytical labs test the environment we live in, pharmaceutical companies design and manufacture drugs that enable us to live longer and healthier, and agricultural companies develop new methods that increase productivity and the quality of food we intake. These applications of chemistry require competent and well-trained people in the field of chemistry.
Recent findings have shown that a high percentage of our nation's students are learning chemistry from teachers who have no degree in chemistry, including a minor. There is therefore a great need and demand for chemistry teachers who possess the appropriate training and credentials to teach in the secondary education classroom. As a pre-professional program, chemistry is an exciting launching point to pursue professional degrees in engineering, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science, dentistry, and nursing and other allied-health field. Professionals in these fields are always in demand and are exceptionally well compensated.
The chemistry program at Jarvis is designed for students who would like to head directly into an industrial position, pursue an advanced degree in chemistry, go on to a professional school or teach at the secondary education level.
