Historians record, interpret and analyze the history of our world. They draw upon disciplines like sociology, anthropology, political science, economics, geography and psychology, among others. The history curriculum presents the student majoring in this discipline with a wide spectrum of courses, which utilize the interplay of social sciences in the interpretation of the past. The courses for history majors emphasize not only mastery of specific subjects, but also historical methods, primary source research and historiography. The overall purpose of this instruction is to prepare history majors for graduate work and professional study, including law school, and employment in private and public sectors. These competent historians may also be able to gain employment as secondary school teachers, historical researchers and interpreters. The history major sequences are designed to enable graduates to gain admission to graduate and professional schools for advanced degrees.
