Area of Literature and Languages
The Area of Literature and Languages is comprised of the departments of English, Spanish, speech, mass communications, and drama. The area supports the college's mission to prepare students intellectually, socially and personally to function effectively in a global and technological society by helping students develop critical thinking skills and basic literacy, develop an appreciation for different value systems, and acquire a thorough background in the systematic appraisal of literature, the analysis of language, and the methods of basic research, and achieve fluency in written and spoken communications.

Degrees
In addition to a traditional major leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree, the area cooperates with the Division of Education to offer a major and minor for students preparing to teach English in the Texas public schools. An additional minor is offered in speech. The area also participates in a dual degree program in mass communication with the University of North Texas to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, and a Bachelor of Arts in Radio, Television and Film. In further support of the Bachelor of Arts degree, the area offers courses in elementary and intermediate Spanish.

Enrichment opportunities
Enrichment opportunities in drama are offered through the productions of the Jarvis Players. Students are exposed to professional standards of the discipline through Sigma Tau Delta, International English Honor Society and the English Club.
