Upward Bound
Program Description
Upward Bound is a federally funded academic program that serves high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree and provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. High school students from the participating East Texas Independent School Districts attend tutorial sessions on the campus of Jarvis Christian College on the weekends and during the summer to receive supplemental instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages. The program also provides academic and social support through tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment, financial literacy, field trips, college planning, and financial aid application assistance.
The Upward Bound Program offers a comprehensive instructional module that includes the following:
- Academic Year Component: The academic year component is a comprehensive, year-round, supplementation program in which student participants attend Saturday Enrichment Tutorial Sessions. These Saturday Enrichment Tutorial Sessions are designed to help strengthen the student participant’s academic proficiencies and engage in volunteer service projects and attend cultural enrichment activities.
- Residential Summer Component: The residential summer component is an academically rigorous yet exhilarating six week session in which student participants live on campus and are exposed to a curriculum designed to increase their academic proficiencies.
- Summer Bridge: The summer following the student participants’ graduation from high school is referred to as the Summer Bridge experience. Bridge students can be enrolled in English, Math, and/or foreign language course(s) and receive transferable college credits upon satisfactory completion. Student participants also take part in volunteer service projects and cultural enrichment activities.
