UNCF RECEIVES $25,000 GRANT FOR JARVIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE’S ADVANCED SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
DALLAS, TX. (April 6, 2011) – UNCF– the United Negro College Fund – the nation’s largest and most effective education assistance organization, today announced a grant from The Rees-Jones Foundation to fund UNCF member institution, Jarvis Christian College’s, Advanced Summer Enrichment Program (ASEP). A proven success in increasing college graduation and retention rate - ASEP better prepares statistically & financially disadvantaged youth for successful collegiate careers by specifically addressing individual developmental needs.
“UNCF is sincerely grateful to the Rees-Jones Foundation for their continued generosity in support of UNCF’s higher education mission” said UNCF’s Area Development Director Diane Stephenson. “Since 2009 the foundation has been partnering with UNCF by investing in our students and helping these deserving – yet financially disadvantaged students - pay their tuition and other college costs. By supporting ASEP, the foundation is helping to ensure more students from the Dallas/Fort Worth and surrounding areas can earn the college degrees needed for successful careers.”
The program is conducted in the summer over four weeks in-residence during which recent high school graduates enhance their study skills, interpersonal communication and leadership potential. The students earn six hours of college credit as well as participate in leadership, academic, enrichment and sell assessment activities. ASEP - unique to Jarvis Christian College – provides an academically robust & valuable learning environment that focuses on diversity, inclusion, mentoring, critical thinking, and college preparation while enhancing students’ personal, emotional and spiritual growth.
“The Rees-Jones Foundation is pleased to assist in the good work of UNCF and its member colleges & universities, and particularly in the college preparation work being offered at Jarvis”, said Thornton Hardie III, President of The Rees-Jones Foundation.
