An Introduction to the Major
In support of the mission of the College and the Division of Arts and Sciences, the Area of Religion provides students the opportunity to develop an understanding of the Judeo-Christian religious tradition and its value system and to appropriate these values in a democratic society.
In addition, this area provides resources for the recruitment and training of students for the pastoral ministry and other church-related vocations. It further provides, through religious activities on campus, the opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to share in a living Christian community.
The area of Religion contributes to the Division through:

  1. Offering courses that stress ethical and moral responsibility.
  2. Offering a major and minor for the Bachelor of Arts degree program.
  3. Cooperating with the Religious Life activities of the College.
  4. Preparing leaders for church-related professions, with special emphasis on preparing students to pursue graduate seminary education.
  5. Offering faculty expertise in personal, academic, and career counseling.
  6. Sponsoring academic, professional, religious, and cultural organizations.
  7. Participating in continuing education programs for pastors, lay-ministers, Christian education leaders, and other church and community leaders.
  8. Demonstrating professional responsibility and competence through participation in the work of the total College, and through membership and active participation in professional, civic, and church organizations.
  9. Providing beyond the College community, opportunities for practical church-related experiences for students interested in church-related vocations and church leadership training.

Course offerings for the Area of Religion include religion and philosophy. This area offers major and minor fields of study in religion for the Bachelor of Arts degree.
