JCC Color Code Emergency System

An emergency is an event, actual or imminent, which endangers or threatens to endanger health and safety, property or the environment. Emergencies include natural events such as earthquake, flood and wind-storms, fires, explosions, road accidents, plague or epidemic, acts of war, hi-jacks, siege or riot, and disruption to essential services.

Emergencies by nature have no defined pattern or preferred location. Generally their onset is sudden and unforeseen. This can make the process of trying to identify what constitutes an emergency difficult.

To identify an emergency, they have been grouped into categories. Jarvis Christian College specifies color codes for these categories of emergencies for instant recognition. Publications and emergency procedure guides should use these color codes to help people instantly recognize the category of emergency.

Fire

A fire in the College is an emergency which causes the greatest concern for staff and students. If all staff accepts that fire prevention is their responsibility, the potential for fires can be greatly reduced and the severity of any fire that does start will be minimized.

Any person discovering a fire should:

  • Activate the nearest fire alarm switch.
  • Rescue any person in immediate danger, if it is safe to do so.
  • Isolate the fire (close doors), alert other people in the immediate area.
  • Contact Security on extension Ext. 2775 or (903)769-5775 giving the following details:
  • Location of fire (building name and floor)
  • Extent of fire (or nature of incident)
  • Are there any injured persons (e.g. is an ambulance or medical assistance require
  • Name of person reporting the fire or incident. This call should be reported to the Building Coordinator.
  • Fight fire if safe to do so.
  • Take direction from the Building Coordinator.

Building Evacuations

Procedures are required for all College buildings to ensure rapid response to emergencies which may need evacuation. OSHA, Federal, and State Safety Agencies require that employers ensure that the means of access to and exiting from the workplace are safe and without risks to health.

Why do we Evacuate?

  • To move people from possible danger to safety.
  • A situation exists in the building that cannot be contained.
  • Emergency Services require the building or area to be cleared.
  • The emergency may escalate quickly and without warning.

Typical Triggers for an Evacuation

  • Fire alarms
  • Power failures
  • Biological hazards
  • Chemical spills
  • Bomb or substance threats
  • Structure collapse
  • Gas leaks
  • Water leaks
  • External hazard affecting the building

Campus Evacuations

The following areas are designated for Campus Evacuation in event of an emergency evacuation order.

  • East Point
