Jarvis Christian University Receives $5,000 Grant to Strengthen Student Ministry Outreach

Jarvis Christian University has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the National Convocation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Black Disciples Education Fund (BDEF) to support student ministry outreach through the Office of Religious Life. The funding represents both a meaningful investment in Jarvis students and a reaffirmation of the university’s historic relationship with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The Black Disciples Education Fund is designed to resource ministries and initiatives that uplift, empower, and strengthen African American congregations and communities connected to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Through this award, Jarvis will expand its student-centered programming, outreach initiatives, and faith formation opportunities that nurture spiritual growth and holistic development.

The Office of Religious Life plays a central role in cultivating the spiritual vitality of campus. From chapel services and Bible studies to leadership development and community engagement, the office provides spaces where students can explore their faith, build supportive relationships, and discern their calling. The BDGF grant will support outreach efforts designed to meet students where they are—creating inclusive programming that fosters belonging, service, and spiritual resilience.

University Chaplain Rev. Dinkens expressed gratitude for the partnership and its impact on the campus community.

“This grant is a tremendous blessing to Jarvis,” said Rev. Dinkens. “Our students are navigating complex social, academic, and personal challenges. Through the support of the Black Disciples Grant Fund, we are able to expand outreach initiatives that remind students they are seen, valued, and spiritually supported. This investment strengthens our ability to cultivate faith leaders who will serve both church and community.”

The funding will help enhance student ministry programming, including leadership development for student ministry organizations, service-learning initiatives, spiritual retreats, and outreach events designed to connect students with local congregations and community partners. By integrating faith formation with service and leadership, Jarvis continues to embody its mission of educating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.

Dr. Kishia James, Vice President of Student Affairs, emphasized the broader student development impact of the grant.

“At Jarvis, we understand that student success extends beyond the classroom,” said Dr. James. “Spiritual wellness and community connection are vital components of a thriving campus experience. The Black Disciples Grant Fund’s support allows us to expand programs that foster purpose, belonging, and leadership development among our students.”

Jarvis Christian University has a longstanding covenant relationship with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and this grant reflects a shared commitment to faith, justice, and community empowerment. The partnership reinforces Jarvis’s identity as an institution where spiritual life and academic excellence intersect.

As the university continues to invest in holistic student engagement, the $5,000 grant will serve as a catalyst for innovative ministry outreach initiatives that respond to the evolving needs of today’s students. Through strengthened programming and deeper community connections, Jarvis remains committed to nurturing spiritually grounded leaders prepared to make meaningful contributions in church, community, and society.

This award not only provides financial support—it affirms Jarvis’s ongoing role in shaping faith-informed leaders for generations to come.
