Jarvis Christian University Announces Yvonne Atkins as 2026 Commencement Speaker
Jarvis Christian University is proud to announce that Mrs. Yvonne Atkins, award-winning educator and President of the Tyler Independent School District Board of Trustees, will serve as the commencement speaker for the University’s 2026 graduation ceremony.
A lifelong educator and dedicated servant leader, Atkins brings nearly four decades of experience in public education, community engagement, and faith-based service. Her life’s work reflects a deep and unwavering commitment to student success, literacy, and leadership—values that align closely with the mission of Jarvis Christian University.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, as the youngest of seven children, Atkins’ journey into education began with her own experiences in the Chicago Public Schools system. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master’s degree in Community Mental Health from Northern Illinois University, later adding a Master’s degree in Reading from The University of Texas at Tyler and principal certification from Lamar University.
Atkins dedicated 38 years to Tyler ISD, where she served as a classroom teacher, literacy specialist, and instructional leader. Throughout her distinguished career, she was recognized multiple times as Teacher of the Year and Teacher of the Month across several campuses. Her expertise spans dyslexia intervention, Reading Recovery, special education, and ESL instruction—demonstrating her commitment to meeting the diverse needs of all learners.
Since retiring from the classroom in 2019, Atkins has continued to shape the next generation of educators as an adjunct professor at The University of Texas at Tyler. Her leadership extends beyond higher education into governance, where she currently serves on the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees and holds the position of Board President.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Atkins is deeply rooted in community and faith-based service. She is an active Sunday School teacher, youth worker, and contributor to religious educational publications within the Church of God in Christ. She also leads literacy initiatives, including tutoring programs and reading clubs for young learners, further demonstrating her lifelong commitment to education beyond the classroom.
Her selection as commencement speaker is especially meaningful to the Jarvis community. Atkins is married to Bishop Dr. Rodney Lamar Atkins, pastor and library director at Jarvis Christian University, reflecting a strong familial and institutional connection.
As the University prepares to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2026, Mrs. Atkins’ voice will bring a powerful message of perseverance, purpose, and service. Her story stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring impact of those who dedicate their lives to uplifting others.
Jarvis Christian University looks forward to welcoming Mrs. Atkins to the commencement stage as it honors graduates who are prepared to lead, serve, and make a difference in their communities and beyond.
