ESSP Career Development Day

Jarvis Early Summer Start Program Hosts Career Development Day to Prepare Students for College and Beyond

HAWKINS, Texas — Jarvis Christian University students participating in the Early Summer Start Program (ESSP) recently took part in a Career Development Day designed to provide practical tools for success in college, the workplace, and beyond.

The day brought together ESSP students and student mentors for interactive sessions focused on résumé building, scholarship applications, and strategies for successfully navigating college. The program emphasized the importance of beginning professional and academic development early, giving students an opportunity to consider how the decisions they make today can support their long-term goals.

As part of the Career Development Day, students also received professional headshots that can be used on LinkedIn, résumés, scholarship applications, and other professional platforms. The headshot experience encouraged students to begin thinking intentionally about their professional presence and how they present themselves to future employers, graduate programs, and professional networks.

“Career development does not begin when a student is preparing to graduate. It begins the moment they enter college and start identifying their goals, building relationships, and developing the skills necessary to achieve them,” said Mr. Jason Lewis, Director of Student Services. “Through the Early Summer Start Program, we want our students to understand that they already have the ability to begin building their professional story. Our responsibility is to provide them with the tools, resources, and support to move forward with confidence.”

During the résumé-building session, students explored how their academic experiences, leadership roles, volunteer service, and developing skills can be translated into a professional résumé. Students were encouraged to view the résumé as a living document that should continue to grow and evolve throughout their college experience.

Scholarship preparation was another major focus of the day. Students discussed strategies for identifying scholarship opportunities, meeting application deadlines, and effectively communicating their experiences and aspirations. The session reinforced the importance of organization, preparation, and persistence when seeking financial support for their education.

Students also participated in conversations centered on student success strategies for college. Topics included time management, utilizing campus resources, developing relationships with faculty and staff, and taking personal responsibility for academic progress.

The Career Development Day was organized in partnership with ESSP student mentors, who helped create a peer-centered experience for participating students. By incorporating student mentors into the program, ESSP students had the opportunity to learn from peers who understand the challenges and opportunities associated with transitioning into college life.

The Early Summer Start Program is designed to help students begin their Jarvis experience with a strong academic and personal foundation. Through intentional programming, mentorship, and engagement, ESSP introduces students to the expectations, resources, and relationships that can support their success throughout their collegiate journey.

Career Development Day reflected Jarvis Christian University’s continued commitment to preparing students for lives of purpose, service, and leadership while equipping them with practical skills for an increasingly competitive professional environment.
