Jarvis Scholar Deara Peoples Shines in Biomedical Research and Academic Excellence
HAWKINS, Texas — August 17, 2026 — Jarvis Christian University is pleased to recognize Deara People, an accomplished undergraduate student whose academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to biomedical research continue to distinguish her as an emerging scholar and future healthcare professional.
A proud Mississippi Delta native from Itta Bena, Mississippi, Peoples has demonstrated a sustained commitment to academic excellence throughout her tenure at Jarvis Christian University, earning Presidential, Dean’s, and Distinguished Honors in recognition of her outstanding academic performance.
On April 7, 2026, Peoples was accepted into the Barbara C. Jordan Honors Program, a distinguished academic program that recognizes high-achieving students and provides opportunities for continued intellectual, professional, and leadership development.
Her academic accomplishments include receiving the Presidential Scholar Award for maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, as well as the Distinguished Scholar Award for achieving a GPA between 3.5 and 3.9.
Peoples is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at Jarvis Christian University and is on track to graduate in May 2027. In addition to her academic accomplishments, she is actively preparing for a career in biomedical research and medicine.
As part of that preparation, she was selected to participate in the University of Virginia School of Medicine Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP). The highly competitive 10-week program provides undergraduate students with an interest in biomedical research the opportunity to gain hands-on laboratory experience while developing essential research and professional skills.
The program also offered participants opportunities for professional development and networking with researchers and medical professionals. In addition, Deara participated in physician shadowing experiences, where she had the opportunity to observe healthcare professionals in clinical settings and gain firsthand exposure to patient care. She was able to see and interact with patients, providing valuable insight into the patient-care experience and further strengthening her interest in pursuing a career in medicine. From late May through early August, Ms. Peoples participated in the program that is designed to support undergraduate students interested in pursuing advanced educational and research pathways, including Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. programs.
Ms. Peoples selection for the program represents a significant milestone in her academic and professional development and reflects her dedication to advancing her knowledge and experience in biomedical research.

Peoples credits her family, mentors, professors, friends, and supporters for the encouragement and guidance they have provided throughout her educational journey. She is the daughter of Shemehker Richards and Darrell Peoples, with Torrey Richards serving as her supportive stepfather. She is also the proud sister of Marvin Conrod, Ralphel Lockett, and Aiden Richards.
