Jarvis Christian University to Observe Constitution Day with Special Chapel Program
HAWKINS, Texas — Jarvis Christian University will commemorate Constitution Day this week, recognizing the signing of the United States Constitution and providing opportunities for the campus community to reflect on citizenship, civic responsibility, leadership, and the continuing significance of the nation’s founding document.
As part of the University’s observance, Jarvis Christian University will host a special Constitution Day Chapel on Tuesday, September 15, at 11 a.m. The featured speaker will be Rev. Dr. Delesslyn A. Kennebrew, Administrative Secretary and Associate General Minister for the National Convocation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
The chapel will provide students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to consider the relationship between education, citizenship, faith, leadership, and service. Kennebrew’s participation also reflects Jarvis’ historic relationship with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the University’s continued commitment to preparing students for lives of leadership and service.
Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is officially observed each year on September 17, commemorating the signing of the United States Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787. The observance recognizes both the formation and signing of the Constitution and those who have become United States citizens by coming of age or naturalization.
For colleges and universities, Constitution Day also carries an important educational purpose. Institutions receiving federal funding are required to provide educational programming concerning the Constitution in connection with the annual observance.
Signed by 39 delegates in 1787, the Constitution established a new framework for the federal government, creating three branches and a system of separated powers and checks and balances. Following ratification by the states, the new federal government began operating under the Constitution in 1789.
More than two centuries later, the Constitution remains the foundation of the nation’s federal system of government while continuing to be interpreted, debated, and amended. Constitution Day therefore offers an opportunity not simply to recognize a historical document but to encourage continued learning about the institutions, rights, responsibilities, and principles that shape American civic life.
At Jarvis Christian University, those conversations are part of an educational experience that extends beyond the classroom. Through chapel, academic instruction, student activities, and community engagement, the University encourages students to think critically, participate meaningfully in their communities, and use their education in service to others.
Tuesday’s chapel will serve as an important part of the University’s Constitution Day observance and provide the Jarvis community with dedicated time for reflection and learning.
