On Friday, August 1, 2025, Jarvis Christian University kicked off the new academic year with its annual Faculty and Staff Institute—a day dedicated to professional development, strategic planning, and community building. Held just days before the start of the Fall semester, the institute brought together faculty, staff, and administrators for an engaging program designed to equip the campus community for a year of excellence.
The event featured special keynote addresses from two dynamic leaders: Dr. Dexter Floyd, Principal at Tyler Independent School District, and Dr. Timothy Hatchett, respected educator and higher education leader. Both speakers challenged and encouraged attendees to embrace innovation, collaboration, and purpose in their work with students.
Welcoming Remarks and Vision Casting
The day began with a warm welcome from President Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt, who shared her vision for the upcoming academic year. She reaffirmed the university’s commitment to providing high-quality, faith-based education while continuing to expand academic programs, strengthen student support services, and foster a culture of excellence.
“Every student who walks onto this campus brings dreams, potential, and a unique story,” Dr. Lee-Pruitt said. “Our job is to ensure that they leave here fully equipped to lead in their chosen fields and communities.”
Keynote Inspiration from K–12 Leadership
In his keynote, Mr. Dexter Floyd spoke passionately about the importance of meeting students where they are and empowering them to exceed their own expectations. Drawing from his experiences in K–12 leadership, Floyd emphasized the value of building authentic relationships, creating inclusive environments, and holding high expectations.
“Our role as educators—whether in elementary schools or universities—is to light a fire that students carry for the rest of their lives,” Floyd shared. “They must know we believe in them before they can believe in themselves.”
Higher Education Insights from Dr. Hatchett
Following Floyd’s address, Dr. Timothy Hatchett delivered a powerful message on innovation in higher education and the critical role faculty and staff play in student success. He spoke about embracing data-informed decision-making, integrating technology into teaching and learning, and fostering cross-departmental collaboration.
“Higher education is changing rapidly,” Dr. Hatchett noted. “We must be agile, forward-thinking, and united in our mission. At Jarvis, you have the advantage of a close-knit community that can move together toward shared goals.”
Professional Development and Collaboration
Throughout the day, participants engaged in breakout sessions focused on academic innovation, student engagement strategies, and operational excellence. Faculty discussed curriculum enhancements, while staff explored service improvements and new initiatives for supporting students inside and outside the classroom.
Setting the Tone for the Year Ahead
The 2025 Faculty and Staff Institute concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and energy. As the university prepares to welcome students for the Fall semester, the lessons from Floyd and Hatchett’s keynotes—combined with the collaborative spirit of the Jarvis community—will guide the work ahead.
Jarvis Christian University extends its gratitude to all who participated in this year’s institute and looks forward to a year of learning, growth, and achievement.
