Jarvis Christian University will confer an honorary doctorate to entrepreneur, educator and accreditation expert Dr. Joseph H. Silver, Sr., during graduation ceremony Saturday, May 6, at the E. W. Rand Center on the JCU campus in Hawkins. 

Dr. Silver is the President and CEO of Silver and Associates, a full-service education consulting firm focusing on accreditation, strategic planning, board development, and change management. The firm has a track record of more than two decades assisting colleges and universities solving complex problems and accreditation issues, as well as developing sound strategic planning. Silver served as an advisor to the firm for many years before becoming a managing partner. He was named President of Silver & Associates in 2012.

His education experience includes serving as president of Alabama State University, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Clark Atlanta University, vice president for Academic Affairs at Savannah State University, assistant vice chancellor for Academic Affairs for the University System of Georgia and as an administrator and professor of political science at Kennesaw State University.

Over his career, he has developed the reputation of a transformational and innovative leader with great vision and principled ethics. He has sound strategic planning skills and is championed as a strong academic thinker who is well-positioned throughout the academy and in the community. His work is recognized on the regional, national and international levels.

Silver received a leadership award from the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education’s (AABHE) and, going forward, the award was named the “Joseph H. Silver, Leadership and Mentoring Award.” Another leadership award is named in his honor at Clark Atlanta University. The National Association of President’s Assistants in Higher Education awarded him the “Professional Achievement Award” for his leadership in higher education. He also has received many other honors. A native of North Carolina, Silver earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and government (summa cum laude) from St. Augustine’s College (Now St. Augustine’s University) in Raleigh, N.C., and his Master’s of Arts and his  Ph.D. degrees in political science from Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University). He also engaged in summer study at Oxford University, APS-Stanford University, and the American Judicature Society.
