Jarvis Christian University Leader Selected for National MSI Aspiring Leaders Program
Jarvis Christian University is proud to announce that Dr. Kishia C. James, Vice President for Student Affairs, has been selected to participate in the prestigious Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) Aspiring Leaders Program hosted through the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions. The nationally recognized initiative identifies and develops emerging leaders in higher education who demonstrate exceptional promise and a commitment to advancing student success and institutional excellence.
The MSI Aspiring Leaders Program was established to cultivate future leaders across Minority Serving Institutions by providing participants with intensive professional development experiences, executive-level learning opportunities, and mentoring relationships with experienced college and university leaders. Through this experience, participants engage in discussions and training focused on areas including strategic leadership, institutional governance, organizational effectiveness, student success, resource management, and navigating the complex challenges facing higher education.
Selection into the program reflects both demonstrated leadership and a commitment to serving students through innovative and transformative practices. Dr. James brings extensive experience in student development, counseling, educational leadership, and community engagement to this opportunity. Throughout her career, she has maintained a student-centered approach while creating programs and initiatives designed to support academic achievement, personal growth, and student well-being.
Since joining Jarvis Christian University, Dr. James has continued to strengthen student support systems while advancing initiatives that promote holistic student development. Her leadership philosophy aligns closely with the university’s mission of preparing students intellectually, socially, spiritually, and personally for meaningful lives of leadership and service. Through the Division of Student Affairs, she has emphasized creating an environment where students feel supported, empowered, and equipped for success both inside and outside the classroom.
“Leadership is ultimately about serving others and creating pathways for individuals to reach their fullest potential,” said Dr. James. “I am honored to participate in this opportunity alongside colleagues from institutions across the nation. I look forward to learning from experienced leaders and bringing new ideas and perspectives back to Jarvis Christian University that will further strengthen our commitment to students.”
With more than two decades of leadership experience in counseling, education, and public service, Dr. James has dedicated her career to supporting students and communities through collaborative and transformative approaches. Her work has consistently emphasized equity, wellness, leadership development, and the creation of environments where students can thrive personally and academically.
Jarvis Christian University celebrates Dr. James on this achievement and recognizes her participation in the MSI Aspiring Leaders Program as an important opportunity for continued professional growth and national engagement. Her selection reflects not only her individual accomplishments, but also the university’s ongoing commitment to investing in leadership that advances student success and institutional excellence.
