Jarvis Christian University Hosts MLK Unity in the CommUnity Prayer Breakfast
Jarvis Christian University gathered students, faculty, staff, alumni, clergy, and community partners for its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity in the CommUnity Prayer Breakfast, a meaningful event dedicated to honoring the life, legacy, and enduring call of Dr. King. The breakfast served as both a time of reflection and a renewed commitment to the principles of justice, unity, and service that defined Dr. King’s ministry and movement.
Hosted by President Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt, the program brought together leaders from across East Texas, including local elected officials, clergy, and community advocates, underscoring Jarvis’s role as a bridge between campus and community. The morning opened with prayer, greetings from civic leaders, and musical selections from the Jarvis Christian University Choir, including the powerful hymn Lift Every Voice and Sing, grounding the gathering in both faith and shared cultural heritage.
A central focus of the event was its emphasis on unity and collaboration across communities. The program highlighted the purpose of the Unity Prayer Service and the Community Scholarship initiative, reminding attendees that the legacy of Dr. King lives not only in remembrance but in action—through education, service, and support for future generations.
The keynote message was delivered by Rev. Demethrius T. Boyd, senior pastor of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Mineola, Texas. Known for his commitment to bridging cultural and community divides, Rev. Boyd challenged attendees to continue building communities rooted in faith, service, and shared responsibility. His message emphasized that Dr. King’s dream remains unfinished and that each generation is called to carry forward the work of unity and justice.
The program also included a special community unity prayer led by clergy from multiple denominations and congregations across the region, symbolizing the collective spirit of cooperation that defines the event. Musical selections, student participation, and the presentation of Community Awards of Appreciation and scholarships further highlighted the university’s commitment to recognizing those who serve and invest in the broader community.
More than a commemorative gathering, the MLK Unity in the CommUnity Prayer Breakfast reflects Jarvis Christian University’s ongoing mission to educate the head, heart, and hand while fostering leadership grounded in faith and service. As attendees departed, the closing hymn We Shall Overcome echoed Dr. King’s enduring vision of hope and progress, reminding all present that the pursuit of justice, unity, and beloved community remains a shared calling.
Through this annual tradition, Jarvis continues to honor Dr. King not only in words but in action—bringing people together, strengthening community partnerships, and inspiring future leaders to live out the dream.
