Upward Bound Students Celebrate Community

Jarvis Upward Bound Students Celebrate Community and Connection During Cookout and Fun Day

HAWKINS, Texas — Summer programming at Jarvis Christian University recently included an afternoon of fellowship, laughter, and community as the University’s Upward Bound Program hosted its Cookout and Fun Day.
The event provided Upward Bound participants with an opportunity to step away from the classroom and enjoy time with their peers, program staff, and mentors. Filled with food, games, and activities, the Cookout and Fun Day reflected the program’s commitment to creating a supportive environment where students can develop academically, socially, and personally.
Throughout the summer, Upward Bound students participate in programming designed to strengthen academic skills, prepare for college, and expose students to new opportunities. The Cookout and Fun Day added another important component to the summer experience: building relationships and creating a sense of belonging.
“Our students work incredibly hard throughout the summer, and it is important that we also create opportunities for them to simply enjoy being together and build meaningful relationships,” said Ms. Carla Mott, Director of the Upward Bound Program. “Upward Bound is about academic preparation and college readiness, but it is also about helping students develop confidence, community, and a strong support system. Days like this allow our students to connect with one another, strengthen relationships with our staff, and create positive memories that we hope will remain with them long after the summer program concludes.”
Students spent the day participating in recreational activities and enjoying the summer atmosphere on the Jarvis campus. The informal setting allowed students from different schools and communities to connect while strengthening friendships developed throughout the program.
For many students, the Upward Bound summer experience also provides an introduction to life on a college campus. By participating in academic sessions, enrichment activities, and social events at Jarvis, students are able to experience elements of the collegiate environment while developing the skills necessary to successfully transition from high school to higher education.
The Cookout and Fun Day also highlighted the important role of community in student success. Upward Bound staff members work closely with students to encourage academic achievement, college enrollment, and personal growth. Through intentional programming and consistent engagement, the program seeks to ensure students understand that they have a network of individuals invested in their future.
Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program designed to provide academic and college preparation support to eligible high school students. The program helps participants prepare for postsecondary education through academic instruction, college and career exposure, mentoring, and other student development opportunities.
As summer programming continues, Jarvis Christian University’s Upward Bound Program remains focused on preparing students for the next step in their educational journeys while creating experiences that make learning, growth, and community an important part of the process.
The Cookout and Fun Day served as a celebration of the students’ summer experience and a reminder that some of the most meaningful moments of student development happen through the relationships and memories created along the way.
